LAURIE LEE WALKS | BURSARY | EXHIBITION
Walking the Land and associated artists are actively involved in the Laurie Lee Centenary Celebrations 2014 which mark the centenary of the birth of Stroud’s celebrated writer Laurie Lee (1914 – 1997)
The celebrations will take place throughout 2014 with a host of events in Stroud and its valleys in Gloucestershire. The programme offers people of all ages a chance to discover or re-discover Laurie Lee’s books and poetry, to walk out and explore the beautiful, ancient Cotswold landscapes of Slad and the surrounding hills and valleys, and to sample Stroud’s vibrant café culture and Cheltenham’s prestigious literary festivals. Look out for walks, workshops, music, poetry, exhibitions, activities for schools and other happenings.
Our walks which form part of the Laurie Lee Centenary Celebrations programme are supported by Stroud Arts Festival.
We welcome applications from artists to join our small group of walkers
Selected artists will walk with us on either our walk from Slad to Southampton or across the Franco/Spanish border and over the Pyrenees.
The walk will be the catalyst to creating new material that will be exhibited along with the works of Laurie Lee at The Museum in the Park, Stroud, during September 2014.
The generous funding by Stroud Arts Festival means that we are able to offer 4 small bursaries of £150, for artists of all disciplines.
How to apply:
1. Write a project description of no more than 350 words, indicating clearly in which of the two walks you would like to participate.
The project is open, but should reference in some way the life, works or walks of Laurie Lee.
The project can be in any exhibitable medium and includes drawing, painting, photography, video, sound, installation, etc, as well as 3 dimensional works, poetry and prose.
2. A brief CV that mentions recent exhibitions held within the past 2 years, together with a personal statement of no more than 150 words
3. Recent works.
Photographs or files of no more than 5 recent works.
(Image files need to be between 1 & 3 Mb each.)
4. Closing date.

Other information:
In order to accompany us, you need to be comfortable with walking around 30 Km a day.
We are unable to provide accommodation on the walks. Most walkers will be staying overnight in B&Bs although someone may prefer to camp.
As we will be walking as a small group, we will provide you an accurate list of our stopping places and list suitable accommodation that will enable you to arrange your own ‘overnight’. The costs and booking remain each individual’s responsibility.
It is expected that Bursary recipients will provide finished, exhibitable material and actively participate in the exhibition of work at The Museum in the Park in September.

‘AS WE WALK OUT….’
SLAD to SOUTHAMPTON WALK (approx.160km)
Invited walkers and artists take part in a 7 day walk which follows in Laurie Lee’s footsteps, taken in 1934, on the first leg of his visit to pre-Civil War Spain – chronicled in ‘As I Walked Out One Midsummer Morning’. Leaving Slad, and armed with tins of treacle biscuits, walkers will pass through Malmesbury, Chippenham, Salisbury Plain and The Wyle Valley, Salisbury and finally the sea at Southampton.
The walk will also be open to ‘guest walkers’ who submit proposals for projects and who may want to join the party for an hour, a day or longer.

‘CROSSING THE BORDER’
PYRENEES WALK, CERET to LA AGULLANA (36km)
Invited walkers and artists take part in a retracing of the walk made by Laurie Lee in 1937 – and vividly documented in both ‘As I Walked Out One Midsummer Morning’ and ‘A Moment of War’ – when he crossed the Pyrenees from France to Spain to support the International Brigades fighting on the Republican side in the Spanish Civil War. The expedition will involve taking an exhibition to Céret and then onto Cataluña, on the role played by Laurie Lee and other members of the Brigades, who fought alongside the Spanish people in an act of international solidarity against a fascist military insurrection. Participants will meet in Céret by 23 July, and information will be available on further possible destinations and trips on both sides of the border.
This will be a circular walk for some and a walk out with a taxi back for others. It will be your choice. Stay for a week in the area and make a holiday of it or just do the walk. We meet in Céret in a bar… Chanel-scented pound notes are optional.
The walk is open to invited ‘guest walkers’ who submit proposals for projects.
