From the River and the Sea
Until early November 2014
Our latest exhibition that celebrates the sea and the liminal landscape of our coastline and rivers. New works by 23 artists using a multitude of media and materials with a wealth of different styles and approaches. Richard Keating’s Assemblage: weaving a community landscape
As a part of a practice led post graduate research project at University of Wales Trinity Saint David, Swansea, this exhibition studies how an arts practice has been involved in a number of Stroud land-based activities and a number of longer walks. Creative processes and ephemeral cultural artefacts have been made which explore the role of a collaborative, socially engaged, landscape arts practice in helping move us towards a resilient and shared future; a community-landscape. The Old Passage Art Awards and donation to the Severn Area Rescue Association
Artists present their donations to Graham Tudor of SARA
2013’s annual Old Passage Art Award attracted considerable interest, jointly organised by Sally Pearce of The Old Passage and Walking the Land, the exhibition was based on the theme ‘Between the Woods and Water’, featuring images and works associated with Gloucestershire’s landscape. Works were submitted by 20 artists and included painting, printmaking, photography and sculpture. First Prize which went to Jilly Cobbe with her study of winter trees. Lucy Guenot gained Second Prize with her relief print of the Severn. Winner of the Public Voter Prize was Jane Hunt Instead of charging commission on sales, the organisers are keen to promote the valuable work of the Severn Area Rescue Association and so artists are invited to contribute a percentage of their sales income to support this valuable local organisation.

RIVER and the Miniature Museum of Memories
Walking the Land, Tara Downs and Bart Sabel. Works in progress and discussions, Ruskin Mill Nailsworth GL6 0LA 4th – 12th September open daily from 10:00 closes at 17:00 weekdays and 16:00 weekends A collective project by Walking the Land artists exploring the river landscape and how it shapes our lives and community. The exhibition includes water related photographs, drawings, video and soundscapes, and Tara Downs and Bart Sabel\’s extraordinary Miniature Museum in which you are invited to leave your story, object and hopes. RIVER is supported by the Cotswold Conservation Board. RIVER ArtWalk and Miniature Museum Collecting Day on Sunday 8 September. A special event linked to the RIVER exhibition in the Gallery.Miniature Museum \’Collecting with Curiousity\’ from 12-4pm in the Gallery. Bring your stories and objects to contribute to the growing collection in this witty, intriguing and moving exploration of water and the part it plays in the stories of our lives.
Rodborough Fields Preservation Group
The Weavers & Workhouse Walk, 9th July, 2013
As a part of the community’s feelings against proposed, inappropriate development of Rodborough Fields, seventy five local people walked and celebrated the social, cultural and natural history of the area. In collaboration with Stuart Butler, Radical Stroud and John Bassett from Spaniel in the Works theatre company, Walking the Land helped lead the walk through the mills and racking fields, along the canal and River Frome, pausing to re-enact moments from the social and industrial history of the Stroud Valleys, and to encounter the natural history and relationship with the Cotswold Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The event was filmed by BBC2 for the upcoming series of The Planners. Many participants wore red to signify the famous Stroud Scarlet cloth and carried scarlet banners both in reference to the drying of cloth on tenterhooks in Rodborough Fields and as banners of protest against current plans. Based on the painting in the museum of the racking fields, the walkers were directed to hold the banners aloft to replicate the scene. This continues earlier participatory and collaborative projects by WtL around the fields, including ‘Racking Fields’(2007) and ‘Capel Mill’(2006) both of which celebrated the links between the textile heritage and landscape, including installing a water powered painting machine at the site of the former Capel Mill Dye Works and stretching cloth across the landscape. The event also served to help Walking the Land collect people’s views about the Settled Valleys Landscape Type as a part of the ongoing project with the Cotswold Conservation Board. http://www.rodboroughfields.org.uk

Walking the Land & Countryfile
Walking the Land appeared on the popular BBC TV programme Countryfile, on Sunday 4th March 2012. We were invited to appear on the show when the production team visited the Stroud Valleys and focused on the artists in the area – including sculptor Anna Usbourne (who spent some time talking about her hugely famous donkeys) In our sequence we talk about our work and walk with the presenter Ellie Harrison…we also give her some creative challenges and several silly things to do. Helping us out were several of our amazing associated artists including Lucy Margaret Guenot, Jilly Cobbe, Chris Smith and Nik Taylor. The challenge to our 18 artists was simple: Exhibit a piece of work that is new (made within the past 6 months) and that hasn’t been exhibited previously. The subject choice was open and selected work includes figurative and abstract artwork that use as subject matter landscapes, waterscapes, interiors and exteriors, food, still life, figure works etc.

‘The Art of Walking’
Coming soon as part of the Laurie Lee Centenary Celebrations; Walking the Land present ‘The Art of Walking’ at The Museum in the Park from Saturday 6 September to Sunday 5 October. Landscape, walks and journeys are Walking the Land’s source of inspiration and the subject for their artworks and installations.Britain’s longest river provides the subject for these walks, as it flows through Gloucestershire and close to ‘The Old Passage’ on it’s 354 km journey to the sea.

BBC radio4’s ‘Ramblings’ taken for a walk
Snow and ice didn’t deter the BBC’s intrepid Ramblings’ team from coming to Stroud and to be taken out across the Cotswold Hills by artists from Walking the Land, their friends and colaborators.
Clare Balding, the well known face of TV sports programmes along with her colleague Producer Lucy Lunt joined lead artists Tom Keating, Richard Keating and Kel Portman on a walk that took them through the woods and open spaces of Rodborough, to draw, record and photograph the landscape.

First Friday Walks
Walking the Land are actually going to get our boots on, polish up our map reading skills and armed with cameras, sketch pads, snacks and all sorts of wet weather gear see what it’s like out there in the big wide world.

100 Days countdown
Walking the Land artists are working together with Dominic Thomas and other regional practitioners in response to The Arnolfini Gallery iniative (www.100days.org.uk) which leads up to the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen on 7th December.
We each intend to produce artworks, events and projects that reflect our concern for the environment and the lamentable procrastination of governments and industry.
Our project relates to the proposed Severn Barrage and highlights concerns about the impact on the River and it’s infrastructure.

‘thinking about.. food’
An exhibition of 18 artists taking place throughout June and July at The Old Passage in Arlingham. Yum!
‘thinking about…trees’
Taking place in Stoud’s Stratford Park, this project is an open workshop that invites artists and members of the public to respond to the Park’s collection and focuses on a tree that is endangered in it’s native China – The Dawn Redwood. Walking the Land have established creative connections with the University of Shanghai and intend to establish ‘exchanges’ through a live web-link on the day.

Thinking Landscape
A seminar jointly organised by PhotoStroud, SVA, Stroud College and Walking the Land to be held at SVA’s John Street building. This half day event will explore some of the issues confronting landscape artists today.

Interactive Digital Signs project at the Cotswold Water Park
In 2008 Wakling the Land colaborated with the Cotswold Water Park and Knowledge West in a pilot project to develop and install three intercative digital visitor interpretation signs in the Cotswold Water Park nature reserve. The system was designed to provide visitors with multimedia information about the park via their mobile phones, to innovatively deliver information to as wide a range of people as possible while minimising the invasion of the natural environment.
Knowledge West is a project run by the University of the West of England in collaboration with the Universities of Bath, Gloucestershire, and Bristol, the Royal Agricultural College, Bath Spa University and Business Link.

Old Passage Art Award 08
Seen here are the winners of last years Award for the public’s favorite artist participating in ‘river’, an exhibition hosted by Sally & David Pearce of The Old Passage at Arlingham and curated by Walking the Land, during the site08 visual arts festival.
Voting was very close with several artists in the running, but the overall winner was textile artist Jo Newman with her artwork ‘Old Tom’.
The very worthy runner-up prize was awarded to Stroud photographer
Sylvain Guenot for his portrait of the elver fisherman Hartly Everet.
Jesse Spurr of Frampton on Severn won the Voter’s Prize.
